Hale Thompson

I am a second-year PhD student in the School of Public Health’s Community Health Sciences Division. I have an MS in Epidemiology, an MA in Sociology, and a BA in Economics.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on mobile technology as a platform for community-building and resilience among marginalized communities in general, and transgender and men who have sex with men (MSM) communities in particular. Given the immense stigmas associated with those on the margins and the increasing privatization of public space, mobile technology is often perceived as a safer, more accessible venue for the work of creating community. Similarly, I am interested in the trend toward mobile governance, including public health, in the name of efficiency, accessibility and transparency. Public health researchers and community members alike have not explicitly interrogated or explored privacy concerns or data security issues around these platforms. My research explores the various social and public health implications of this migration to cyberspace.
