Karen Heart

I am a second year PhD student in the Department of Computer Science and IGERT fellow at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have an MS in Computer Science from DePaul University, a JD from the University of Texas, and a BS in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University.

Research Interests

I am primarily interested in computer security and privacy. Currently, I am studying approaches to increase the safety of software through improved programming practices, particularly with regard to the problem of SQL Injection attacks. As part of this work, I am exploring ways to incorporate elements of instructional design within software tools and documentation. One important application of security and privacy that concerns me greatly is telemedicine. So far, I have explored threat modeling and Federal statutory and regulatory requirements for security in Electronic Health Record (EHR) software.
